Description:
This three-day interactive workshop delves into the historical and cultural impact of African influences on Latin American music and culture. Designed for K-12 educators, it features hands-on activities, discussions, and practical exercises to deepen understanding of African musical traditions' resilience and evolution.
Participants will explore the migration of African musical traditions and their influence on genres such as salsa, cumbia, and samba. Educators will gain practical tools to integrate these cultural connections into their classrooms through interactive discussions, rhythmic exercises, and curriculum development sessions. The workshop also highlights African contributions to instruments, dance, and broader cultural practices, providing a comprehensive understanding of Latin America’s diverse heritage.
By the end of the workshop, teachers will be equipped with inclusive strategies to enrich student learning and foster a more global perspective.

Open to current K-12 educators in all disciplines.
Registration:
Registration for the workshop is completed in two steps:
1. Submission of short online application Deadline May 31, 2025
2. $125.00 Online Payment (Debit/Credit Card). This wokspop is partially funded by Department of Education Title VI. The registration fee will cover three days of workshop, materials, food, and parking.

All partcipants are expected to be present and actively engaged all three-days of the workshop. In addition to classroom contact hours, paticipants are required to access reading materials, discussion questions, and other resources and assignments online via a course website.
To receive LAUSD salary credit (approval pending for 1 multicultural salary points), teachers are required to complete all assignments and readings and produce a curriculum development project that incorporates material learned into standards-based lesson plans centered on the workshop's themes.
