African Studies Center Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Application for Academic Year 2022-2023

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are provided by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education Title VI program. The program is intended to broaden the nation's pool of area and international specialists. Applicants should be planning to use their training to teach, to serve in government or international agencies, or to engage in other work that advances American understanding of other countries.

The FLAS program supports UCLA graduate and undergraduate training in African Studies Center and modern languages of the region.

READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY

1. You must be applying to study a less commonly taught language of Africa at an intermediate level or above during the award period.
2. To save your application in progress, click SAVE and you will receive an e-mail with a link to return to this application at a later time.
3. After you have entered your information on each page, click Next to continue to the next page.
4. On the final page, click Review. You may return to previous pages to make revisions.
5. To submit your application, click Submit on the review page.
6. SUBMIT your application early so the system can send emails with submission links to your two recommenders.
7. Upload blank documents if necessary to submit and you can go back to update and revise the application at a later time.
8. You may go back to edit your application after submitting up until the deadline. The committee will not review applications until after the deadline.
   

Selection for the award is based on the following criteria:

1. Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident.
2. Academic performance and potential as evidenced by academic transcript (unofficial is fine), letters of recommendation and statement of purpose. 
3. The extent to which overall course of study focuses on the African Studies Center region.
4. The level of planned language study. Intermediate and advanced levels are preferred.
