The February 23 conference commemorated the 40th anniversary of President Nixon's historic visit to Beijing and Shanghai and his meetings with Chairman Mao. It was sponsored by the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations, the UCLA Center for Chinese Studies, and the UCLA Confucius Institute.
Panel I:
This panel assessed the significance of President Nixon's visit at the time, in the US as well as in China. What did the historic summit symbolize about the relationship between the two powers, and how was the summit received domestically in each? What larger impact did it have on the Cold War? In retrospect, were Nixon and Mao visionaries, or would other leaders have acted similarly?
