In light of February’s failed U.S.-DPRK Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, many remain skeptical that the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is still achievable. As a result of newfound diplomatic engagement with North Korea in the pursuit of denuclearization, North Korea’s egregious human rights record has been sidelined by the U.S. government in negotiations with the Kim regime. Some scholars have argued that the improvement of human rights within the DPRK, and the empowerment of North Korea’s jangmadang generation is the key to facilitating internal, long-term change within the country.
