*A two-day conference exploring the Indian Ocean World which links Eastern Africa from the Cape to the Horn, islands of the Indian Ocean, southern Arabia, lands bordering the Red Sea and the Gulf, South Asia, and western Indonesia. Major cultural exchanges across its waters and around its littoral date to the beginning of the current era, and probably far earlier still, and were greatly accelerated following the rise of Islam in the seventh century CE. *CO-SPONSORS: The University of California Humanities Research Institute, James S. Coleman African Studies Center, International Studies & Overseas Programs, World Arts & Cultures, Department of French & Francophone Studies, and MRG on Transnational & Transcolonial Study. *The Center for Near Eastern Studies focuses on the Middle East and the Islamic world.
